With a rapid deployment speed, the 5G coverage will reach half of the U.S. population in 2020. However, it must be 2024, 50% of the new American population owns 5G equipment.
In an interview with CNBC, Mr. Hans Vestberg-CEO of Verizon said that about 50% of the U.S. population would be able to reach 5G waves next year.
The 5G coverage is rapidly expanding so it is a new technology called Universal Sharing (DSS) and leverages the infrastructure of the 4G network. Hans Vestberg also made predictions that by 2024, half of the U.S. population would possess devices capable of connecting to 5G.

Currently, Verizon’s Hans Vestberg is one of the pioneers in implementing 5G. Verizon chooses the mmWave band (Milimeter Wave). This is the frequency range that allows 5G to reach its highest speed, although the coverage of this technology will be limited. This also means that the 5G wave that Verizon deployed can only cover certain locations in the city where the network is launched.
According to Hans Vestberg, Verizon’s goal is to provide a superior speed experience for 5G users, and therefore, the mmWave technology has been chosen by this operator.
5G coverage is evolving at a faster rate than 5G connected devices.
Verizon’s CEO also reassure users in other regions when it is said that the operator will soon expand its coverage due to its universal sharing technology (DSS). This is a technology that enables the operator to share the frequency spectrum between 4G and 5G users. At this point, a spectrum can be used collectively for all two types of devices, which help to quickly expand the range of 5G networks.
Currently, there are only 3 types of devices sold by Verizon, which are compatible with 5G waves, namely LG V50 ThinQ 5G, Samsung Galaxy S10 and Motorola Moto Z4. This will change as soon as the next year, many other manufacturers are also intent on the 5G equipment market. That was the reason Hans Vestberg made a prediction that 50% of the American population would possess 5G equipment in 2024.
Currently, Verizon has aired 5G in nine U.S. cities. From now until the end of the year, there will be about 30 cities in USA that are deployed 5G by Verizon network operators.
